"Cheap vacation" has become a marketing term that usually means an off-season week in a place you do not want to go, or a hotel-only deal where the flights double the price. The list below is the opposite. Ten destinations where the all-in cost per person (flights, lodging, food, activities) typically comes in under $2,000 if you are leaving from a major U.S. gateway and staying 5 to 10 nights. Each pick has a note on why the number works.

The deep-value tier: cheap flights plus cheap ground costs

The all-inclusive value plays in the Caribbean sit here. Cancun and Punta Cana have short-hop flights from most U.S. gateways, with per-night all-in rates that make the total math brutal on any European alternative. The Cape Liberty Bahamas cruise is a different kind of value: no flight cost at all if you drive to New Jersey, and food plus lodging is bundled into the fare.

The Portuguese and Central European value zone

Central Europe and Portugal are the classic under-$2,000 destinations. Flights typically run in the mid-hundreds-to-low-four-figures from a U.S. gateway. Hotels, meals, and transit all run meaningfully below Western European prices. Lisbon crosses the ocean but stays under budget because Portuguese food, transit, and mid-range hotels cost half of Spain or Italy. Prague and Budapest cost less than any Western European city. Athens sits in the middle with a great food scene and cheaper air hubs than Rome or Paris.

The stretch tier (right at the ceiling but worth it)

These push against $2,000 mostly because flights run higher from a U.S. gateway. But on-the-ground costs are so low that a well-planned 7-day trip lands right at the ceiling and delivers a full immersion. Buenos Aires steakhouses, Marrakech medina wandering, Cartagena's walled city at sunset. The trip feels like it should have cost twice as much if you do not check the receipts.

The beach picks under $2,000

Tulum is the value beach pick. Mexico flights are cheap, and you can stay in Tulum-town cabanas for a fraction of the beachfront-resort prices. Negril is a genuinely great beach with an all-inclusive infrastructure that bundles food and drink. Albania's Riviera is the sleeper. Ionian-blue water, prices that Italy has not touched in 20 years, and almost nobody from the U.S. there yet.

One warning: airfare is the volatile variable. All 10 of these destinations get more expensive the closer you book. If you find good fares to any of these, book flights first and hotel second. Trip math is almost always decided by the fare you lock in, not the hotel you pick.
