April is the single best shoulder-season month in Europe, the back half of Japanese cherry blossom season, peak wildflower weeks in the US South, and the last reliable Costa Rica dry weeks before the rains return. This guide picks eight destinations where April is a legitimate best-time-to-visit, not a compromise.

European shoulder season at its best

Rome, Athens, Barcelona, and Lisbon all hit their sweet spot in April: 60 to 75 degree afternoons, flowers everywhere, outdoor dining fully open, and crowds a fraction of summer. Hotel pricing typically runs 25 to 40 percent below June peaks. A week in Rome in April runs $1,500 to $3,800 per person including flights and mid-tier hotels; Athens is $1,400 to $3,500; Lisbon $1,400 to $3,500; Barcelona $1,500 to $4,000. Easter 2027 falls on March 28, so most of April is post-Easter, with a quiet dip in early April and prices climbing again by month end as summer approaches.

Japan after the cherry blossom peak

Japanese cherry blossoms peak late March to early April in Tokyo and Kyoto. By the second week of April, the blossoms are mostly gone and the premium pricing drops, but weather is spectacular (65 to 72 degrees) and the first wisteria and azaleas open. Golden Week (April 29 to May 5) is a major Japanese holiday with domestic travel surging; avoid those exact dates. Mid-April to late April is one of Japan's quietest, most beautiful travel windows at $2,200 to $5,000 per person for a week.

US South peak season

Charleston's azaleas and wisteria peak in early April, Savannah one to two weeks earlier. Both cities run $1,100 to $2,500 per person for four to five nights with mid-tier hotels. Nashville is strong in April with mild weather pre-summer humidity. Napa Valley hits its spring peak with vineyard mustard flowers through early April and bud break visible across the valley.

Last reliable Costa Rica weeks

Costa Rica's dry season ends in April. The first two weeks are reliably sunny; the last two weeks see occasional afternoon showers but still mostly dry. Lodging and tour pricing typically softens 15 to 25 percent in mid-to-late April as the rainy season approaches. Expect $1,500 to $4,500 per person for a week with eco-lodges and guided day trips.

April is the thinking traveler's month. Peak summer destinations (Caribbean, Mediterranean) are getting more expensive, winter destinations (Caribbean peak, Southeast Asia dry) are winding down, and the shoulder destinations are at their best. Pick the shoulder.
