June is the start of the Northern Hemisphere peak season but the pricing has not fully caught up until later in the month. The first two weeks of June in Mediterranean destinations are often 15 to 25 percent cheaper than the second half of July. Alaska and Scandinavia hit their midnight-sun peak; Iceland is in its most reliable weather window. Here are seven trips worth the June slot.

Alaska and Iceland for the long days

Alaska Inside Passage cruises are at their peak in June: 19 to 22 hours of daylight, calving glaciers, and wildlife active after a long winter. A week-long Alaska cruise in June runs $1,500 to $6,500 per person depending on cabin type. Denali and Kenai Fjords land-based weeks run $2,000 to $4,500 per person. Iceland in June has nearly 24 hours of daylight; a week-long ring-road or guided tour runs $2,500 to $6,500 per person. Both are at their best in June and early July; by late July crowds build sharply.

First two weeks of Mediterranean

The first two weeks of June are the last pre-peak window for Mediterranean destinations. Water is warm (72 to 76 degrees), weather is reliable (80 to 88 degrees), and hotel pricing is 15 to 25 percent below the second half of July and all of August. Santorini, Amalfi, and Mediterranean cruises all deliver their full experience at better pricing. A June Mediterranean cruise runs $1,400 to $6,000 per person for a week.

Western US at full capacity

Yellowstone and Grand Teton hit their full operating capacity in June with all roads open, every lodge running, and shuttle bus service in Grand Teton. Weather is reliably warm (70 to 85 degrees in valleys) and wildlife is active. Expect $1,900 to $3,800 per person for a Yellowstone week; Banff $2,200 to $4,500. Both are more crowded than May but with better weather and full infrastructure.

June rewards travelers who commit by mid-April. The first two weeks are the last soft-pricing window for Mediterranean destinations; by June 15 most hotels have raised rates for the summer peak. For Alaska and Iceland, booking by February is realistic for cruise cabins and small-ship expedition weeks.
